Candied Yams

This past Thanksgiving as I was assigning everyone their dishes, we realized nobody had sweet potato.

Now, I have never eaten a bite of sweet potato, much less ever made them.
I figured everyone would want the "traditional" dish with the mini I googled it and came up with this recipe.

I ended up doubling it as there are many, many of us.
Um, in the interest of full disclosure, I didn't know until I opened the can and placed them in the dish. I looked at them, thought about it, looked again....and decided to brave the store the day before Thanksgiving.

Imagine my surprise to find next to nobody in the store! Psyched!

I made them, they got eaten by most all...but it still wasn't eaten by me.

Maybe one year I will brave it.

1 (29 oz) can sweet potato
¼ Cup butter, cut into pieces
½ Cup brown sugar
1 ½ Cups miniature marshmallows

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
2. Place sweet potato in medium baking dish
3. Place butter cubes all over the potato
4. Sprinkle with brown sugar
5. Top with miniature marshmallows
6. Bake 25 minutes

Come party with me HERE!

  1. I like whole sweet potatoes, not the can. I microwave them for me and eat it with my Brummel and Brown (margarine made with yogurt).

My momma use to make a casserole like this every Thanksgiving.

  2. I love sweet potatoes - this looks yummy. My favorite is heather's sweet potato casserole on my website.

    1. Thanks, I'll check it out. I am always looking for new ways to make sweet potato as this seems to be "my job" now LOL

  3. I love candied yams and remember my grandmother's version from my childhood. Your recipe looks yummy.

  8. Jay, I've never seen canned sweet potatoes before. I wonder if they taste the same. It would make life easier though if you could just open the can without having to cook them first, especially if you need to make a lot.

  9. How wonderful to be able to avoid the crowds that close to Thanksgiving, Jay! Your Candied Yams look so tempting! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe, and for being a part of Hearth and Soul.
